6 Common Mistakes when Working Out

Everyone has to start somewhere even when working out. It will take some time but you’ll learn the basics of operating different types of gym equipment, follow proper etiquette while in the gym, and so on. However, there are plenty of instances where you are hampering your workout because of making simple but crucial mistakes that can do you more harm than good.

So what mistakes do people tend to make when working out? Here are 6 of the most common errors everyone is guilty of at some point.

Forgetting to Warm-up

Although there is no harm in skipping your warming up session especially when you’re doing low to moderate workout, this can lead to serious injuries when you increase the intensity of your exercise regimen. It is important that you warm your muscles up and your heart rate beating faster so you can perform the core of your exercise properly. Squats, arm circles, side bends, shoulder shrugs, and trunk twists are examples of warm-up exercises that you can do to get your blood pumping.

Overwhelming Yourself

A lot of people want to achieve a toned physique or lose weight quickly hence they are punishing themselves with endless workouts to get more calories burned. Sounds like a good enough solution to achieve your goal faster, right? Wrong. You’re actually hindering your progress when you overwhelm yourself with endless workouts because you tend to get tired faster and not just physically but mentally as well.

Focusing on a Single Muscle Group

It’s not surprising that many tend to focus on just one area of their body when they workout. This causes imbalance due to the lack of symmetry. There will be areas of your body that will stronger than the rest which can hamper your movements and can cause injuries too.

Not Following a Plan

Most beginners tend to jump from one workout to the next without any clear direction as to what they want to focus on or what their goal is. If you want to get the most out of your exercise, you should come up with a plan first so you can flow from one exercise to the next to target key muscle groups.

Lack of Sleep

One of the reasons why many workouts tend to fail is due to the lack of sleep or rest. The body needs to recuperate after an intense workout session and when you deprive yourself of your much needed rest you are hindering the healing process of your muscle tissues. Keep in mind that your muscles need time to heal the slight tearing in the tissues so they can grow bigger and stronger.

Inconsistency

This is probably the biggest blunder most people make. Just because you’ve worked out today it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do any physical activity the following day. It’s easy to skip a workout but if you keep telling yourself that you’ll exercise the next day, chances are you’ll find another reason to not work out at all.
