The General Motors Diet: What Is It and How To Do It

A lot of people undergo dieting and for different reasons. Some do it to supplement their active lifestyle and maintain their top physical condition while some do it as prescribed by their doctors to achieve a healthier body. On the other hand, there are also those who do diet trends because they want to lose weight to look and feel good about themselves.

 

There are different kinds of diet. There is one that only allows meat to be consumed and another forbids rice or any other form of carbohydrates to be eaten. There is also a form of diet that removes dairy from what one eats while another only recommends steamed, boiled or baked food.

 

One type of diet that has recently become famous because of its weigh-loss capabilities is the General Motors Diet. Now, it’s not exactly clear whether this eating trend is “invented” by the executives in the famous car manufacturer or just an urban myth. Nevertheless, the name has stuck and people know it as the GM Diet.

 

According to its background, this diet was developed by the people in General Motors to help keep their employees in tip-top shape in the 80s.

 

Its introduction said, “The following diet and health program was developed for employees and dependents of General Motors, Inc., and is intended for their exclusive use. The program was developed in conjunction with a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It was field tested at the John Hopkins Research Center and was approved for distribution by the Board of Directors, General Motors Corp., at a general meeting on August 15, 1985.”

 

It further added that the company “endorses” the program and would make it available to the employees and their families through the General Motors Food Service Facilities.

 

Fast forward to three decades after and the diet has made a resurgence but is now not exclusive to the employees of the said company.

 

The weight loss program is composed of a seven day eating plan that makes use of select foods for consumption that would help the body burn more calories so that one does not gain the weight.

 

For the one week of the diet, it is recommended that one does not take any alcohol during that period and to consume at least 10 glasses of water daily.

 

Day 1: One could eat all the fruits he wants provided that no bananas are consumed. It is recommended that one eat watermelons and cantaloupes, as these fruits are high in water content and would make one feel full faster.

 

Day 2: Start your day with eating a boiled potato for breakfast. For the whole day, eat only vegetables. No limit is given on the amount one could consume but it must not be cooked in any type of oil, including coconut.

 

Day 3: This time, one could eat fruits and vegetables the whole day. However, bananas and potatoes must still be avoided.

 

Day 4: Finally, one could eat bananas and drink something else aside from water – milk. Up to eight bananas could be eaten this day along with up to three glasses of milk. One could also add a small bowl of vegetable soup.

 

Day 5: Here come’s the feast! At least for this week as one introduces meat into his diet. One is allowed to eat up to two 10 oz. portions of lean beef and six whole tomatoes. To curb the hunger, one must increase the glasses of water to be consumed.

 

Day 6: Again, one could eat beef meat today with vegetables. This could be in unlimited portions.

 

Day 7: The last day is when you could finally eat rice again. Just be sure that it’s brown rice. Add this with an unlimited portion of vegetables and fruit juices.

 

Weigh yourself the following day and you could see a loss of 10-17 pounds. This diet is good to be tried for more than one time in a year, provided there is at least three days recovery period in between.
