The Good and the Bad of Fitness Trackers

Fitness trackers have taken the world by storm. Once they were limited for runners and athletes but now almost everyone who is concerned about their weight and health are wearing or are using them. As a matter of fact, fitness trackers have been used for decades as pedometers were worn by athletes to gauge the number of miles they’ve jogged or run but in these time where technology abound, these fitness trackers have taken a life of their own.

Fitness trackers are no longer limited to tracking the number of miles you’ve run but can also include the number of steps you’ve taken, the amount of calories that go in and out of your body, how many hours of sleep you’ve had, and so on and so forth. There are so many different fitness apps today that it can be quite confusing for average Joes who are considering using these trackers for their health. The question, however, is whether fitness trackers are good or bad for you.

The Good in Fitness Trackers

So what’s great about fitness trackers? Here are a few benefits worth mentioning.
Reality Check. You’ve probably assumed that you’re a very active person what with all the work you are doing both in your home and in the office. Turn on your fitness tracker and you’re surprised that you don’t even get to 1,000 steps in a day. Sitting on your bottom for hours on end can have negative effects to your body even if you work out. The fitness tracker can help you get a reality check that you need to start moving and pronto!
Data Gathering. Training to build muscle mass or lose weight or just getting fit also means having to determine whether you are making progress or not. A good fitness tracker can generate reports based on your input so you can easily figure out if you are doing well with your training program or not.

Another benefit to wearing a fitness tracker is that it helps you stay motivated in losing weight. There are several fitness trackers where you can get to connect with various health and fitness communities where you can get support and help with your workout plans.

The Bad Side of Fitness Trackers

Now that you have an idea on the benefits that you can get out of fitness trackers, what are the downsides to using one?

Inability to measure all kinds of activities. Fitness trackers have their limitations and one of them is measuring the calories you’ve burned when you’re skiing, gliding, or even skating. Perhaps there are too many parameters to consider but one thing’s for sure, fitness trackers may not give you the results you are looking for.
Accuracy. This is probably the biggest issue with fitness trackers. Even if you wear two devices then work out, chances are the results will come out differently. So which is which?

Data paralysis

For those who are taking weight loss in a more scientific approach there is a tendency to get lost in the numbers. Also, since fitness trackers aren’t exactly accurate, there is already a discrepancy with the data that you have making it difficult to get the right information.

The bottom line here is that fitness trackers have their good and bad sides. It is entirely up to you on how you’re going to use these trackers for your own fitness goals once you weigh the pros and cons of these devices and apps.
